Rocky Rural Power is the Retail Energy Division of Rocky REA. The Alberta Department of Energy is phasing out the stable Regulated Rate design starting July 1, 2006. In order to maintain stable competitive rates for our members into the future, a division, Rocky Rural Power was formed. Rocky Rural Power provides REA members with additional retail energy choice and promotes fair retail energy competition in the changing Alberta Electric Industry.
Electricity retail products and services are competitive. You are free to choose an energy retailer. Regulated wires services are not dependent upon the energy retailer you choose.

Rocky REA History
Prior to 1950 there was a desire for rural residents in Alberta to have electricity for their farms and ranches. It was viewed at that time, by the utilities, that farms and ranches used such a small amount of electricity, that it would not be economically viable for the power companies to supply power to the rural residents. Farmers and Ranchers, being the independent people that they are, formed Rural Electrification Associations to bring electricity to the countryside. Along with some help from the provincial government, sweat, equity, and very little cash, the REA built the lines; and the lights in rural Alberta slowly came on. It was a heroic effort by our parents and grandparents that has given us the luxury that electricity gives us today.
Lockhart REA was formed January 1952; Rocky REA followed closely getting started April 1952. Both REA's were operated by the Utility of the day which was Calgary Power and later changed to Trans Alta. In 1993 Rocky REA moved a step closer to independence by negotiating what was known as the 93 contracts. Lockhart stayed with the utility company until June 7 1999, when they amalgamated with Rocky REA, The process of amalgamation lasted almost for a year, weighing out the pros and cons. Rocky and Lockhart decided it was in the best interests of both REA's to amalgamate. The New Rocky REA was formed, giving a combined membership of 2440 members. In January of 2006, Horseguard REA also amalgamated with Rocky REA Our member service now totals in excess of 3300 sites.
The REA's in Alberta have played an important role in developing rural power in the province of Alberta. The people they serve own their Rural Electrification Association. The Associations operate as a not for profit organization, where by, all savings are passed on directly to the association membership.
