Our Vegetation Program

Rocky REA's extensive Vegetation Management Program eliminates safety hazards, reduces power outages, and improves power quality.

Electricity can travel through the limbs of vegetation towards the ground, energizing the ground and creating a dangerous situation. Maintaining the clearances around energized power lines, structures, and equipment is important.

Rocky REA has an obligation under the Alberta Electrical Utility Code (AEUC) to maintain the trees around overhead power lines to a safe distance. The code states:

"The operator of an electric utility system shall ensure that trees near overhead power lines are trimmed so that the following minimum clearances are maintained at all times, including the period between trims: (a) a vertical and horizontal clearance of 1.0m plus the minimum distance to prevent flash over."

Our program operates on a four-year cycle, managing trees and other vegetation growing around power lines. For that cycle to be effective, the management activity in the service areas needs to achieve enough clearance to maintain the line for four years.

We appreciate your patience as there is often close to a year between the time our consenters visit you and the crews arrive on site to complete the work. Please call our consenters back on their cell phones if they leave you a voicemail or note on your door.

Only certified utility tree trimmers are allowed to work on or around energized power lines

How You Can Help

Members can help the REA to control the costs of vegetation management through the careful selection and planting of vegetation. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact your Rocky REA at 310-POWR (7697).

Members are responsible for:

  • Choosing vegetation that will not encroach on power equipment when mature
  • Noting the location of the outer edge of the mature vegetation; this is the drip line
  • Allowing six meters of clearance from the drip line to any energized lines or structures

What Our Program Includes:

  • Removal with a mulcher where possible followed by a spraying which gives the longest lasting control and is the most cost effective
  • Removal by slashing followed by spray
  • Trimming for many species of trees has to be done every 3 to 4 years and is the most expensive method of control. We encourage the use of trimming only for yard site shelter belts.

For information on areas that are scheduled for vegetation management or to request vegetation management, please contact your Rocky REA at 310-POWR (7697).
